On October 18, Latinos in Action, LIA, partnered with Unified Cheer, Spanish Honor Society, and many others to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a “fiesta.” These groups came together in the courtyard to promote Hispanic culture and raise awareness.
Coming together was no easy task. There were lots of obstacles and inconveniences along the way. Stormy weather postponed the event from October 12th to the 18th. There was also a supplies challenge when some of the items needed were unavailable to use. Even with such difficulties, they were able to improvise and pull it all off.
Furthermore, LIA advisors, Mrs. Torres and Mrs. Fernandez, worked with the presidency to promote various countries and prepare for the event. The students in each class were tasked to research and arrange a table for each of their perspective countries. During the event, students walked around as they learned about Hispanic countries and their culture, featuring Colonel Donnelly who dropped the beats of Latin music.
This event brought connectivity throughout the school. When asked, many members such as Mrs. Torres and Leisurelyz, all felt similarly. Both mentioned how the event was a huge success and how it brought the students and groups involved together. Another student, Nomaris Hernandez, the VP of LIA stated “I felt that Hispanic Heritage month was really welcoming and inviting for everyone. It was a way to incorporate everybody on the school campus and it was fun.”
From the delightful music to seeing Señora Hidalgo representing the Dominican Republic, Hispanic Heritage month made an impact on everyone that day. It truly made everyone come together. From ROTC, Unified Cheer, the Spanish Honor Society, and the World Languages Department, they all helped make this event LIA memorable.
